Selecting the Right Bathroom Countertop

Bathroom remodels are a great idea for anyone looking to update old fixtures and improve the overall value of your home. If you are doing a full remodel, one of the most important decisions to make is selecting the right countertop for your bathroom.

Bathroom counters should be elegant, durable, and practical. But how do you know which is the right countertop, with so many options? At Edesia Kitchen and Bath Studio, we have helped more than a few homeowners choose the perfect countertops and can share tips to help get you on the right track for your ideal bathroom countertop choice.

What Makes a Good Bathroom Counter?

When choosing a bathroom countertop, you're looking at more than style. The four elements of a great countertop in the bathroom are durability, appearance, edge design, and slipperiness.

Durable Stone

Durable countertops are designed not to crack under pressure or stain when exposed to things like moisture and toothpaste. You will likely want a natural stone or sturdy tile, and to avoid laminate which is based on particle board that will melt over time.

Elegant Appearance

Naturally, you want your bathroom to be beautiful. The right choice of stone or tile countertop will depend on the colors and styles available to match your bathroom decor.

Rounded Edge

It's always best to avoid sharp corners in the bathroom, so edge design can help to make your bathroom countertop both safer and more elegant.

Not Too Slippery

Slipperiness isn't just a concern for the bathroom floor. A countertop with a little texture also makes your bathroom safer and easier to use daily.

Choose Your Counter Stone

What type of countertop  material is best for a bathroom remodel? Bathroom countertop stone should be non-porous or sealed, beautiful, and offer a little texture.

Granite

Granite is extremely durable and beautiful. It comes in a wide range of colors and grains, and can last for decades of elegant service in your bathroom. Granite is, however, porous and will need to be resealed every three to five years.

Quartz

Quartz countertops are artificial stone, very heavy but also non-porous and extremely customizable. You can find quartz countertops in almost every color and style, looking unique or like any type of natural stone.

Soapstone

Soapstone is a rare nonporous type of stone with a lovely texture that is popular in bathroom designs, but should be sealed to prevent scratches.

Tile

Tile is always a good option for bathroom design, and you can choose from a wide range of tile materials, finishes, and textures.

Bathroom Countertop Edge Design

In the bathroom, rounded or softened countertop corners are best. This can help to prevent injury in case of a fall and make bathrooms safer for small children, as well. There are several types of blunted countertop edge designs, but three that work best without adding to your countertop budget.

Eased

Eased countertop edges are at right angles, but the edges have been softened. Instead of coming to a sharp corner, all corners are slightly rounded.

Beveled

Beveled countertops have a 45-degree angle at the top edge and eased corners, which appears both elegant and provides greater safety. Top beveling is the most popular, but you can also choose a top and bottom beveled edge to suit your style.

Bullnose

Bullnose countertop edges come to a smooth round instead of having any corners at all, and a half-bullnose is rounded until it reaches a flat underside.
